Senior Golfers Union of South Africa (SGUSA).
Provincial societies:
The Management Committee of SGUSA – MANCOM
- SGUSA was formed in 1937 in East London.
- SGUSA is the co-ordinating body of seniors golf in South Africa.
- The principal objectives of SGUSA are to deal with national issues and maintain a unified direction for seniors golf in South Africa.
- SGUSA operates in terms of its own formally adopted constitution.
- SGUSA is not affiliated to the South African Golf Union.
- All 9 provincial societies are affiliated to SGUSA.
- SGUSA gives its powers to a Governing Body.
- The Governing Body delegates the running of the union to the Management Committee (MANCOM).
Provincial societies:
- The Senior Golfers Society of the Transvaal (now Gauteng) was formed in 1935 at a meeting held at the Germiston Golf Club.
- By 1937 four more societies were formed, and by 1954 there were 8 societies. The ninth society, Gauteng North, was formed in 2008.
- Each society has it’s own constitution. However, all have the common objective of playing friendly matches and competitions together and against other senior teams.
The Management Committee of SGUSA – MANCOM
- In terms of the SGUSA constitution, the Gauteng Society is mandated to nominate the members of MANCOM. These nominations are confirmed at the annual general meeting of SGUSA.
- The following are the positions on MANCOM:
- Chairman
- Treasurer
- National Tournament Director
- International tours
- Information technology
- Secretary
- MANCOM meets monthly.
- Seniors golf was conceived in the Unites States of America.
- The dream of Horace L Hotchkiss was to stage a golf tournament exclusively for older men. He convinced his friends to admit there age and forget their infirmities! On October 12 1905, they played 36 holes at the Apawamis Club in Rye, New York.
- The United States Seniors Golf Association was formed in 1917 the first in the world, Apawamis remains the home club of the association.
- This was followed by Canada in 1918 and Great Britain in 1926.
- The World Senior Golfers Federation has over 50 member countries.
